I just read a nice article in Camaro Performers magazine about the durabilty of the 4L85E. Gearstar says this tranny is the ultimate automatic. They claim when built right, they''ll handle over 1,000 hp.
The 4L85E is slightly longer than the The 4L60E, so it requires the d/s be shortened by 1/4". Gearstar supplies a custom 3" diameter heavy duty steel shaft and 32 spline yoke with 1350 u-joints. (The 4L60 uses 27 spline)
Their bundled package is, tranny, custom crossmember, Yank torque converter and custom built HD steel driveshaft for $5k. Before shipping, they run their trannys on a specialized dyno which can simulate load and replicate speeds up to 130 mph.
For those who have gotten tired of blowing the 4L60 trannys and opted to use the TH350 or TH400, this seems to be a better option.
