  • Project: Putting a real motor in a RX-7

So my best friend Zac has been a big rotary head for a couple years. Well last year we built a really nice setup that was 2400lbs, 13B-REW with a GT42-76mm and a Haltec E-8 EMS. Well it was fast, but he got schooled by my stock 6.0L all year and it pissed him off. Last week, he blew his 3rd rotary, and to my suprise, the descision was made, so look what i picked up today. And as expected, i took one pic and the camera died. What i accomplished today was removing that mess of a harness, EGR, and pulling the fan and accesories off.

    LR4 - 4.8L with 9.7:1 compression
    4l60-E
    63,000 miles

The plan for this project is to get this thing into Zacs car, and have it stay under 2600lbs. Target HP is around 500whp@10psi on the stock parts for now, and it will likely do 10s@135 or so. Parts that will be used are:
Grannys Speed Shop mounts, crossmember and driveshaft
Pro Products Typhoon intake (same as mine)
    42# or 65# injectors
Medium sized used camshaft, most likely a 2003 ZO6 piece
HP Tuners tune with 2.5bar speed density upgrade
    backwards stock manifolds
    Borg Warner S400, 75mm with 83-trim turbine in a 1.10A/R housing
    Tial 44mm wastegate
    4" exhaust out the back

Ill be posting up updates and progress as i get this done, and any cool new parts i get.

What about the rear diff? How fast do you think you can go on the stock one? My lucky guess would be 10.17 but maybe just once.

Yep, fixed. The 4.8 is the LR4. The car is a 91 FC, and suspension wise it just has drop springs so far. The stock NA diff has held up really well and we have gotten quite a few 1.5x 60's out of it so far. When it blows we'll probably just go with the Turbo 2 rear, and at this weight that should take us to bottom 9s pretty easy. Although a 8.8 ford rear is always an option as well.

Scored a cam for this motor last night. I looked around and it was perfect for a 4.8, got it for $200 used.

not selling it, dont need the 317s at this time either.
The mounting cradle and trans crossmember came yesterday, talk about easy installation. Driveshaft will be here next week. hopefully i get some paint on the motor this weekend.

very cool project. i've always been a fan of v8 7's. Before I got the mustang I almost picked up a '79 base model to drop a 5.0 in.

remember to keep up with the pics as you go.

I am the noob that finally wised up :).... we could get the show rolling if it would ever get painted.... jebus

any way ther should be lots of pics posted throughout

oh yeah went with the edelbrock Victor Jr manifold and fuel rails, doing one of Edelbrocks new intake elbows to utilize the stock TB also, manifold is here, needs paint

here is a pic of what the the big single rotary setup looked like, we had made the intake/turbo manifolds ect. on that

never really saw full potential out of that.... never tuned and on pump gas,...... once it started its naughty habits again it was bye bye
