Lance before you break in the next cam get an old pont distrib. and cut off the top part where the spring advance are and then pull off the gear and then you will have a primer for you engine.
I did this years ago when I was having trouble with BB chev cams going away. I bought one of those primers but found out that the oul was not getting to one side of the lifters.
Now I let it run with a HD drill untill I have oil coming out of the rocker arms. Sorry about the bad luck and if you need help before you get the next one going let me know if you need any help.
