  • 455 freshen up/money pit

Well hopes of a quick re-ring and bearing to freshen up the Pontiac has went down the drain. Found bent valves and mismatched sized rods. But on the good side nothing is cracked and the crank is good. I ordered new H-beam rods and Ferrea valves yesterday. The whole motor should be a new animal since the last time I dynoed it: Lunati cam, victor intake, different headers, 1.65 roller rockers, and E85 carb. I've learned it doesn't pay to buy someone else's "built" motor, slowly everything gets changed to how I would've built it. We'll see if I'm doing any good when I get it on the dyno though.

Either way cut the valves. Ever since I bought my souix valve and seat grinder I have found more out of tolarance valves. Now every valve I use gets a clean up on the machine. Next I am going to try and cut some old ones down to a new size to use then in other heads. Talk about recycling.

Yeah I told them I wanted zero deck height and they said when they checked they had pistons down .005 -.020" in various holes. They said it was from some rods being resized at some point I guess. It'll end up being a good thing, from what I've been reading 455 rods weren't strong for anything much over 5500rpms. I just didn't really need the extra cost of all this.

yeah it sucks like that, but it will be worth it in the end so just stick it out! its only money might just have to forego some other stuff for awhile

yeah...most utilize the torque so no high rpm there. The cranks on those are humongous.
