  • Yet another GM 3800 recall for valve-cover oil leaks under hard braking.

Looks like the original fix for the engine fires caused by valve-cover oil leaks under hard breaking with the early 2000's 3800-equipped cars didn't work. Just got my second recall notice for the GTP - and it's for the same problem they supposedly fixed during the last THREE recalls!

But then I had the entire top-end redone (new heads) a couple years ago, due to valve-seat recession on one jug. The shop that did the work (owner is a long-time friend who also builds & races 8-sec drag cars) is noted for using top-notch parts. Should I still bring it to the dealer for the recall?

2002 Pontiac Grand Prix Engine And Engine Cooling Recall 15V701000
    • Action Number: N/A
      Service Bulletin Number: 15V701000
      Report Date: Oct 26, 2015

      Component: Engine And Engine Cooling
      Potential Units Affected: 1003556
      Manufacturer: General Motors LLC
    • Summary: General Motors LLC (GM) is recalling certain model year 1998-1999 Chevrolet Lumina and Oldsmobile Intrigue, 1997-2004 Buick Regal and Pontiac Grand Prix, 2000-2004 Chevrolet Impala, and 1998-2004 Chevrolet Monte Carlo vehicles. The affected vehicles were previously repaired under recalls 08v-118, 09v-116, and 15v-201 to address the possibility that engine oil may drip onto the hot exhaust manifold.
Consequence: Engine oil that drips onto the hot surface of the exhaust manifold may result in a fire.
Remedy: The remedy applied under recalls 08v-118, 09v-116, and 15v-201 did not adequately remove the safety risk. Under the improved remedy, dealers will replace the engine¿s front valve cover and gasket. Vehicles that are covered by recalls 08v-118, 09v-116, or 15v-201 that have not yet received the original remedy will instead receive the improved remedy under the original recall number, once the improved remedy has been finalized. Interim notices are expected to be mailed to owners in December 2015. Owners will receive a second notice when remedy parts become available. Owners may contact Chevrolet customer service at 1-800-222-1020, Buick customer service at 1-800-521-7300, Oldsmobile customer service at 1-800-442-6537 and Pontiac customer service at 1-800-458-8006. GM's number for this recall is 15757. Note: until the improved remedy has been applied, owners are advised to park their vehicle outside since the fire risk exists even when the vehicle is unattended.

What if the replacement cover had M/T engraved on it?
