  • Ford's highly touted Eco-Boost lol

All the hype about Ford's Eco-Boost and there are all kinds of problems with it, but it has been kept hush-hush within the national media. Also...the Ford loyalists are never gonna own up to problems with this brilliantly marketed but over-rated truck. I mean...why would a Ford owner admit they forked out a ton of dough only to be embarrassed to realize they pissed their money away for a problem designed truck? Hmmm...spend premium $$$ for eco-boost unproven powertrain to get similar mileage from a 5.3 GM Sierra/Silverado proven powertrain.

This guy isn't asking for anything out of the ordinary...

Ford F-150 Ecoboost problems limp mode and many other issues
for the first 20,000 miles (plus or minus) I was a Major Ecoboost fan, since then my thoughts of Ford and This engine/truck have changed a little. What would you guys do about this?

Starting around 20k miles my truck started missing while sitting at idle, a random CEL (which would not shop up on a scanner after it went off), a random reverse camera issue where it will not come on (or when it does come on it is black and white and very grainy looking), sometimes while trying to get onto an on ramp and gassing the truck hard it would fall on its face and return to idle (yes, while merging) and you would have to let of the gas and slowly reapply, when traveling at highway speeds the truck would mis or start stuttering and shaking (bad enough the steering wheel would shake up and down at least a 1/2" (it happens in 5th and 6th gear then at about 32k miles the truck would go into limp mode while trying to pull a 6*10 single axle angle top lowboy.

I took it to the shop (on 4/24/12 and had a few small things fixed but all of the above was on a list of problems I provided to the service adviser. A week later (4/30/12) they called me and told me to pick the truck up. I went and got it and on the repair order it said they re flashed the PCM and installed a new cat. On the way back to my office I could feel the mis at highway speeds again, i just took note of it and kept going begin i didnt have time that day to mess with it. That evening after leaving work and trying to get on the interstate it started the return to idle crap and about got me creamed.. The loaner truck I had borrowed while my truck was in the shop was going to be tied up for a few weeks so I couldn't return it to the shop yet. All of this was on 4/30/12.

Thursday (5/3/12) I was headed back to my office from a meeting and my CEL came on again so i pulled into the dealership to see if they could pull a code while the CEL was still on, I was afraid that if the CEL went off it would not store the code like before. They jumped on it and it had three codes (p0300, p0304, and p0430) the tech gave me a print out to bring back when I could leave it again and I left. The print out has a report that says "cylinder 4 misfire detected)

On 5/21/12 I tried to pull a trailer to work with me hauling my lawn mower and the truck went back into limp mode and after about 20 miles it had lost all power.. I knew my Dad was either right in front or behind me so I called him and he come and towed my trailer to work for me. I took the truck back to the dealership that day and dropped it off again, this time i provided the same list to the SA and had updated notes written on it about the things that were fixed and the things that were not fixed. It would probably have happened sooner but my wife had a baby on the 8th and i took a week off of work and then didn't do any outside work the few weekends following.

on 5/29/12 the SA called me and told me I could pick up my truck, I asked her what was wrong with it and she said she didn't know and it was not fixed. As you can imagine I started asking questions. She informed me that Ford wouldn't authorize them to throw any parts at it because they was not sure what was wrong with it but they had a TSB that would be out in 4-6 weeks and that would fix it. I asked her what I was suppose to use for towing in the mean time and she said he didnt know. I then called the service manager and spoke to him about the issue. He told me the same thing and told me they would not be able to give me a loaner vehicle because ford wouldn't pay for it. Because I could drive my truck.

I called ford and started a case and was told the regional rep would contact me in 24 hours.

When the rep called me I was not at my desk so after hearing what she had to say I asked her If could call her back from my office phone. when I first spoke to her she told me that would not give me a loaner vehicle because I could use my truck for it's intended purpose and that the truck was not designed for towing. I about lost it... I told her have you seen a single ecoboost commercial? at this point I asked her If I could retrun her call and record the conversation becaues I was not believeing what she was saying.

Out conversation is below. I called her and told her I was recording and then this started...

    You Tube

since then I have spoke to three other reps that tell me the same crap and refuse to offer me a vehicle to drive until mine is fixed... i pull a small trailer every week end and they refuse to give a crap but yet they advise me not to drive in limp mode...

here it is in limp mode

This is the new ecoboost outboard edition... sounds like a freaking boat...

here is the reverse camera issue... this is after they have already "fixed it' once..

Like my dad always says, never buy the first year, or maybe even the 2nd of something until they get the bugs worked out. He put 38 years in with FoMoCo. Ford still hasnt gotten their diesel trucks right since the 7.3.

Wonder how many Ecoboost have problems like this? Would hate to be the tech to try and figure this out. Hows the 5.0 version doing on complaints? Fords dont come with Auto Transfercase either. But heard that GMs having issues also. Guess there doing alot of headgaskets..

To be fair...I realize that not ALL Eco-Boosts are problematic. I just think there are Ford owners who are actually having problems but will never admit it publicly because they're so proud of these trucks. They'd never admit they made a mistake buying them.

The scary part is the denial by Ford that there's a problem and shifting the blame back on the owner for axle ratio "selection". Ford realizes they have many issues with this truck and I feel are using the owners as guinea pigs to help work out the bugs. They deserve what they get. lol

          Huh?

GM is NOT having head gasket probs out of any NEW GM engine. '97? '98? maybe.

Maybe you can give us a link to a brand new GM having head gasket probs.

We're talking about a BRAND NEW FORD here.

No link. I work with someone that just bought a new GM and thats what the techs told him anyways. They told him to keep up on oil changes 3000-4000miles and you will not have a problem, it's the guys that wait for the oil change light to come on that have problems, but maybe it's 1 out of 3000 IDK. In general the GM has less stuff to go wrong, no turbo, no direct injection and I like that. Seems companys over engineer everything for the same outcome. IE the ecoboost get 2-3 mpg better then the GM.

I have not seen a lot of ls based engines with head gasket troubles, but I do know one thing, the rip off mechanics that are working at GM are to blame for some of this. These clowns are telling people they need head gaskets when there is nothing wrong just to sell work, been there seen it done and almost every head gasket I looked at did not have anything wrong with it. It is a shame when these guys give GM, Ford or any other manufacturer a black eye.

I do know that the old gen I and gen II small blocks have had issues with gasket failure but most of the time the gasket fails was a result of people not flushing the cooling system at a regular time even though GM said you can go up to 100K, that's just wrong.

To me a turbo on a gas engine turck may have some problems now and then as a turbo is more finiky than a N/A engine. To each their own. What I would like to see is GM to come out with the V6 turbo diesel in the truck and that would get soem great milage and power.

Wasnt GM using dexcool up through the mid/late 90s? I'd expect that is/was likely the issue causing cooling and head gasket issues on the pre ls engines.

In my opinion, there's nothing wrong with dexcool. GM's mistake was to market it as good for 100K. With aluminum engine components, I think it works better than conventional and is less corrosive. That was the main purpose of converting to it. I certainly wasn't going to replace it with the regular style in my Camaro when I had the chance.

I saw the dexcool turn to mush when radiator caps went bad, allowing air to get into the system.

I have an ecobost with 25k miles with 0 problems. I get 21-24mpg on the highway depending on how much I need to race minivans. I have heard of some of these having trouble, but not sure that a single owner reporting trouble indicates many owners NOT reporting trouble?

In all seriousness, what makes you think there are more Ford guys having trouble with trucks and not reporting it than GM guys? Are you psychic?

                    :)

Was not the dexcool that was the problem but the water that GM mixed it with.

Don't get snippy with me about my comments regarding your beloved Eco-Boost, sir. I once worked at a Ford dealership and have stayed in contact with guys who still work at Ford dealers. They admit there are issues with these trucks. All of them? Nope. But more customers are becoming dissatisfied and frustrated with driveability issues. They are trying to "re-program" the computers hoping to resolve some of the complaints.

As far as GM powertrains, I see the warranty records and have spent a considerable amount of time in the GM service aisle listening to customers. I also have access to warranty records and I have sold hundreds of them. There's a big difference between the brand new un-proven Eco-Boost powertrain and a GM powertrain that's been on the road for hundreds of thousands of miles. Anyone with a logical brain would realize that.

You may be the owner of ONE truck but I have access to hundreds of them. Do yourself a favor and stop trying to match my experience and access to real world data. You are only making yourself look silly in a data situation you can't match me in.

Hey, I didn't realize I was being snippy by my response. I would hope you know me better than that by now than to think I would take potshots and personal attacks at you... yet you're reacting like I did exactly that here and I'm not sure why. I think you are going a BIT too far based on a retort to an argument I wasn't having with you?! I guess since I don't agree, I'm attacking you now? Did Quadrofux hack into your account?

I never said just because *I* have had 0 problems that nobody else did. I actually said there were some that had reported trouble. If you think I'm not on those forums as well as these local "GM boards" you're crazy. I think it is mostly with the transmissions shifting rough and some general driveability. I certainly don't see LOTS of these trucks having issues.

Sure, show me the warranty info that shows Ecoboosts have more service than other trucks from Ford and/or GM. Help educate me instead of berating me for asking simple questions. All I see in this thread is a pissed off F150 guy that had a problem with his truck and the customer service rep was not terribly helpful (yes I watched the vid) and posted on the forums about it trying to get it resolved. And here you are jumping on the anti-Ford bandwagon as usual telling us there are MANY more that have issues but the media is covering it up but somehow YOU know all about them? What FACTUAL information are you using? Your "buddies" info? How is the MEDIA covering this up???

And yes, Ford continues to use new technology. It's called INNOVATION. It's what they are priding themselves on these days. Not the same old same old with a new body like they could be doing.

I own a 2011 Crew Cab 5.5' box 4x4 with 365hp & 420ft/lbs of torque that can tow 11,000 lbs (getting 12-14mpg while doing it) and I get 22+ MPG on a REGULAR basis. All from a BONE STOCK V6. I am pretty impressed with it. Have you ever driven one? Would you like to? I'm more than happy to let you take a test drive and beat on it.

                          Dan

Hmmm.. I make a post and you reply by asking if I'm psychic? You may be able to reply that way to your punkass TCS members, but I won't sit back and take that berating shit. You then compare me with quadroflux because I post a differing and factual post about an unhappy Eco-Boost owner? If you're happy with your little v-6, then good for you. And if you're stupid enough to pull 11,000 lbs with a 1/2 ton truck because Ford said you can, then you are a dumbass. Lol

Hey, it appears you are way more invested into this discussion than I am if I got you that upset simply by asking if you were psychic. Last I checked it wasn't berating you or even to be meant as an insult, much less one that sparked you to tell me that you will make me look silly?

You pretend you're totally innocent here when you said you simply "made a post" talking about "all the issues" with Ecoboosts and then I got supermad and lashed out and called you a horrible name. I replied asking if you were psychic because you were referring to multiple Ford owners that "weren't reporting about Ford problems" when you posted a report of one single guy on a forum. I do agree, the regional rep was full of BS and I cringed every time she spoke about the axle ratio, don't use the truck for towing, etc.

Regardless, it's obvious to me that in your eyes, the only proper response to your post in this thread was a "OK, yep you're right, you finally proved it to me. Ford does suck". If that's the case on this "GM" board then it's news to me.

Otherwise if I gave up the Ford fight, what else would we have to talk about around here?
