    Anybody seen this? Pretty crazy.

Los Angeles 2011: Ford Unveils Refreshed 2013 Mustangs, 650-HP Shelby GT500

Written by: Jake Holmes on November 16 2011 2:00 PM

When it comes to the new Mustang, Ford is emphasizing one key metric: 200 mph. That’s the top speed of Ford’s fastest-ever factory Mustang, the 2013 Shelby GT500. While all versions of the 2013 receive a mild refresh and some equipment changes, the GT500 is undoubtedly the showstopper at the Los Angeles auto show.
The new GT500 has a supercharged 5.8-liter V-8 engine that produces 650 hp and 600 tire-shredding lb-ft of torque — figures that easily trump the outputs of Chevrolet’s Camaro ZL1. On top of that, the 2013 GT500 gains electronic launch control, a carbon-fiber driveshaft, larger Brembo brakes, and Bilstein adaptive dampers.
The Mustang Boss 302 also scores some changes in the form of retro-inspired graphics. Designed to look like the Trans-Am-winning Boss 302 race cars of 1970, the 2013 Boss gets new reflective stripes and an available School Bus Yellow paint job. Racer Parnelli Jones would be proud.
Regardless of which version you pick, the Mustang enters the new model year with a tweaked face and tail. The headlights (now HIDs as standard) have new LED running lights, and the front fascia is slightly revised. New LED taillights and a blacked-out trunklid round out the visual changes at the rear. On top of that, GT models gain functional hood vents and an extra six horsepower, bringing the 5.0-liter V-8 to 420 hp.
Equipment changes include trickle-down performance bits: the Recaro bucket seats and Torsen limited-slip differential from the Boss 302, for instance, can now be optioned on base and GT trim levels. And the 2013 Mustang is available with a new instrument cluster display showing Track Apps like performance gauges and acceleration timers.
No matter how much has changed in other versions of Ford’s famed pony car, we keep coming back to one question: will we be brave enough to travel at the supercar-like velocity of 200 mph in a Ford Mustang? We’ll probably find out soon enough — hopefully on a long, straight, and very smooth piece of asphalt.

    2013 Shelby GT500
The 2013 Shelby GT500 wants to make the Camaro ZL1 its bitch
You know how the Chevy Camaro ZL1 was supposed to be sitting atop the Muscle Car War heap? Yeah, not so much anymore. Meet the 650 HP 2013 Shelby GT500 — it's gonna try to make the ZL1 its little bitch.
Yes, you're reading that correctly — the new Shelby GT500's 5.8-liter supercharged V8 engine is rated at an astonishing 650 HP and 600 lb-ft of torque. That's a whopping 100 HP and 90 torques more than the 2012 model year.
It's almost as if Ford's adding the power just so it can shove its snakeskin-boot-clad foot right up the NACA ducts of its bowtie-bedecked competitor.
That's right, in fact, I'm wondering why they're even bothering to call it a GT500 anymore. Shouldn't they be calling it the GT 650 or something more appropriate for a muscle car with a 200 MPH top speed?
    Whatever.
Anyway, this might just seem like Ford's plopping a bigger engine under the hood, right? Of course not. I mean, what would make you think that?

I don't really care for the look of the GT500, but I like Ford's mentality. GM needs to stop tryin to "1-up" Ford by a couple horsepower and go for the jugular. That's what AMG for Mercedes does - if BMW announces a 500 hp car, AMG comes back with a 620 hp car.

Competition is a good thing, and this will force GM to improve the ZL1 for 2013 or 2014 and come back with even more power.

        Interesting:

        http://www.detnews.com/article/20111...eles-spotlight

But if you want power, Ford Motor Co. and General Motors Co. might have created the most buzz with the newest editions of their legendary pony cars.

Ford brought out its 650-horsepower 2013 Shelby GT 500, a car the automaker says can top 200 mph. While it has the same squared-off looks of other Mustangs, it's all the work under the sheetmetal that is really impressive.

And to hear its engine rumble is automotive heaven.

The 2013 Camaro ZL1 convertible is equally as impressive, though it creates only 580 horsepower.

That didn't discourage Joe Ewanick, vice president of GM's marketing, from throwing a challenge at Ford.

"We should take a Camaro, Ford brings a Mustang, we each pick our drivers, and see who has the best time on the Nuremberg Ring," Ewanick said, referring to the legendary race track in Germany.

Jim Farley, who heads Ford's global marketing, was not swayed by the challenge (though it did appear he was biting his tongue slightly).

"I wish we could," he said, after hearing about Ewanick's challenge. "Who wouldn't want to do that?"

It's funny how the locals on the GM site praise this car. You would think they would be all over the ZL1? maybe they should consider changing the name of thier site :laughing smile: Most of those guys could not afford a V6 car let alone a 650hp GT. Trailer trash I tell you.:laughing smile:

i saw the posts over there. who gives a shit about this ugly piece of crap it still is fugly. ford always trys to brag about horsepower but just like the overated so called terminaters with popped motors like popcorn and fantasy et times where are they now? funny you dont hear much about them or see them anymore. zl1 is three times better looking and would still be a drivers race if the two lined up at the dragstrip. look at zman running 11s with almst 200 less hp than some peabrained cobra owners with there so called 550 rwhp couldnt run any quicker. that jackass from tcs made all kinds of excuses about his hi hp and hi 11 ets. he said he was running on 7 cyls and when caught in his lie said drag racing was booring. hope a few local ford jerks will buy this overated piece of shit so zman can make fools of them but the ones at the gm site can't afford a ford or even a bicycle.

yea hp alone dont get anybody to the finish line first. 650 should be around 550 rwhp and raceweight still be over 4000 lbs. 03 cobra owners right now with 550 at the wheels who can't run better than hi 11s and they weigh a couple hundred less than the ugly and heavy gt500 so why is anybody afraid of the new gt500 with the stupid garter snake emblem?

A timely response from a GM spokesman...

"For Mustang fans, you're welcome. Clearly the Camaro has encouraged Ford to throw everything they can at us."

                    Camaro Nation:

As you know, the blogs lit up with the announcement of the new 650-horsepower Mustang GT500, and I wanted to give you my perspective on the latest challenge from Dearborn.

The Mustang has been playing catch up since the moment the fifth-gen Camaro arrived in 2009. Since then, Camaro has been the best-selling sports car in America, indicating that consumers know which car offers the best performance, style and safety.

It is no coincidence that Mustang has introduced three 100-horsepower increases to keep pace with Camaro: First their V-6 was bumped to 305; then their V-8 went to 412, and now the GT500.

Even with the 100-hp increase, the 2013 GT500 will still not match the technology and sophistication of the 2012 Camaro ZL1.

The days of "no replacement for displacement," are over, and it's not enough to be fast in a straight line. With the Camaro ZL1, we set out to deliver integrated performance, and be equally good at acceleration, braking, grip, and turning. As you will soon see, that's why the Camaro ZL1 will set the performance benchmark for the segment.

Our approach was to make every Camaro ZL1 fully track-capable, from the factory. As we announced today, the ZL1 Coupe will start at $54,995 with standard Magnetic Ride Control, standard Performance Traction Management, and standard track-capable equipment such as a rear-differential cooler, brake cooling ducts, and an engine and transmission cooler.

None of our customers will have to buy extra options – or modify their ZL1 – for track-day usage. That is not the case for the current GT500, or their new car.

For Mustang fans, you're welcome. Clearly the Camaro has encouraged Ford to throw everything they can at us.

For Camaro fans, trust me, we are always listening to your feedback, and working hard to keep the Camaro in the lead.

                    Al O.

The previous GT500 couldn't even beat a frickin Cadillac. lol

It's precursor is the Cadillac CTS-V running a generation older magnetic ride, skinnier tires and the same powertrain with "only" 550hp and more weight. This is how it stacked up against the GT500.
