Los Angeles 2011: Ford Unveils Refreshed 2013 Mustangs, 650-HP Shelby GT500

When it comes to the new Mustang, Ford is emphasizing one key metric: 200 mph. That’s the top speed of Ford’s fastest-ever factory Mustang, the 2013 Shelby GT500. While all versions of the 2013 receive a mild refresh and some equipment changes, the GT500 is undoubtedly the showstopper at the Los Angeles auto show.
The new GT500 has a supercharged 5.8-liter V-8 engine that produces 650 hp and 600 tire-shredding lb-ft of torque — figures that easily trump the outputs of Chevrolet’s Camaro ZL1. On top of that, the 2013 GT500 gains electronic launch control, a carbon-fiber driveshaft, larger Brembo brakes, and Bilstein adaptive dampers.
The Mustang Boss 302 also scores some changes in the form of retro-inspired graphics. Designed to look like the Trans-Am-winning Boss 302 race cars of 1970, the 2013 Boss gets new reflective stripes and an available School Bus Yellow paint job. Racer Parnelli Jones would be proud.
Regardless of which version you pick, the Mustang enters the new model year with a tweaked face and tail. The headlights (now HIDs as standard) have new LED running lights, and the front fascia is slightly revised. New LED taillights and a blacked-out trunklid round out the visual changes at the rear. On top of that, GT models gain functional hood vents and an extra six horsepower, bringing the 5.0-liter V-8 to 420 hp.
Equipment changes include trickle-down performance bits: the Recaro bucket seats and Torsen limited-slip differential from the Boss 302, for instance, can now be optioned on base and GT trim levels. And the 2013 Mustang is available with a new instrument cluster display showing Track Apps like performance gauges and acceleration timers.
No matter how much has changed in other versions of Ford’s famed pony car, we keep coming back to one question: will we be brave enough to travel at the supercar-like velocity of 200 mph in a Ford Mustang? We’ll probably find out soon enough — hopefully on a long, straight, and very smooth piece of asphalt.
