SAN FRANCISCO (MarketWatch) -- General Motors said on Tuesday total sales rose to 177,603 units in October from 170,585 a year ago, marking the first year-on-year gain since January 2008. Car sales slid by 13% to 63,935 units while truck sales increased 17% to 113,668. Chevrolet, Buick, GMC and Cadillac sales accounted for 95% of sales last month, compared with 85% in October 2008, the Detroit automaker said.

Total U.S. October sales of Toyota light trucks fell 2.3% to 56,555 vehicles, and total car sales rose 1.5% to 95,610 units. Sales of Toyota brand vehicles fell 2.3% to 132,663, and Lexus sales jumped 19.8% to 19,502 vehicles.

Nissan's total car sales climbed 1.8% to 39,743 while truck sales increased by double digits to 20,372 from 17,893. Nissan division sales rose 7.7%, outperforming the Infiniti brand which fell 9.3%.

By brand, U.S. October sales of Chrysler models fell 36% to 12,815 units a year ago, while sales of the Jeep brand dropped 37% to 13,500, and Dodge brand sales declined 22% to 26,265. Total truck sales for the month fell 31% to 48,247 vehicles, and car sales fell 30% to 17,556 units.
