  • Ugly?

It seems a little presumptious to call someone elses car, Truck, Girlfriend, wife, mother, sister etc ugly. When that happens it appears that the perpetrator is making a judgement not only about something that is dear to someone else, but also in a very negative way. This not only goes to their opinion of your "UGLY" thing, but to your lack of good taste or judgement for making such a poor choice. I wonder if those people considered just how it would be recieved by the target of their negative comments. Isn't beauty or uglyness more a matter of personal taste, and therefore in the eyes of the beholder? Should there be assumed a special elevated status to the issuer of such edicts? Would an example of "I consider Civics to unappealing to me" be a better way of putting it? At least it would not set up the issuer of the insult as some self annointed guru and judge of beauty and or the lack there of!

So if you can't call something ugly, then you can't call something beautiful? Wouldn't it work the same way? I do understand what your saying about it being labeled ugly, and it being negative. But isn't it always just assumed that it's that persons opinoin, or do they have to always say, "in my opinion the new camaros are ugly".. A better way to make the statement would be to make a comparison, "the new camaros are ugly compared to the new challengers". Then you have something to judge it against and you know its that persons opinion. Just cuz someone says something negative about something doesn't mean its labeled that and it'll hurt the cars feelings, the owner should be smart enough to recognize an idiots stupid opinions and brush it off.

Now, lets get them damn ugly mustangs off TCO!!!

            Tom's message was eloquent. lol

But on the other hand....jollywrencher's was nearly as eloquent.

Although...I disagree with the blanket comment regarding the new Camaro.

IMHO, if I see a new Challenger at Porky's, I would go over and tell the guy "that's a nice restoration you did on your Challenger"

              Fugly

I like the replies from JW, Bob, Glen and Mike. They all made me smile. I guess my original thought was, there is enough negativity in the world, let's hope it will be held to a minimum here. I think that Mike, Bob and or Glen could say just about anything to me and I would assume that is was in good spirit. I don't think I know JW but he seems like an eloquent and well spoken person. I have been accused of being too sensitive in the past, and I have to admit it's probably true. I think when I see comments from a super moderator that presumably owns a Civic, I wonder if the pot is calling the kettle black. Not that I would ever actually say that Honda's suck, or that Civics are "Fugly". I would probably just coment that IMHO they dont hold as much appeal as other Asain products. I however am not in a position of power and or authority, and therefore don't have to be as careful and diplomatic as those who are. I think that the elevated status of being in a position like that should come with the added responsibility of weighing words and actions more carefully, in order to avoid loss of good will.

Marc. I thought it was you. Bill was right about the fact that I'm easily confused. It's good to hear from both of you guys. I ran into Bill and Tracy at CF Proky's 06.

I would have to agree with your statement. My wife and get in this argument all the time mostly cause I like anything mechanical and can find something cool about anything. If she has no intrest that's as far as it will go and she thinks it's ugly. My own example a kid down at Porky's has tan colored VW golf don't know who he is but I thought the color was ugly on the car and he heard me say it. I saw the engine compartment and he also heard me say it was one of the best looking engine bays I have ever seen and was very clean. So yeah I might think it was ugly but the kid did a damn good job on his entire car. And that negates the ugly factor.

                          war story:

i'm cruising on 169 @ around 3 am, i see a mint black late 80's fiero GT. i throw her into 4th gear (winter daily driver) and hover right next to him for a few yards, motion him forward as i wanted to race, he then downshifted as well after seeing this, as i notice his car rock heavily like a civic hatch. so we are crusing, then i gun it and he stays behind me, then i pull away hard 2, 3, 4, then 5 car lengths as a reach 5k in 4th, i let off and he drives 45mph in a 55 and is too ashamed to pass, so i exit.
