  • Anybody into car audio here?

I know that exhaust notes are probably music to most people here. But is there anyone that enjoys an after-market stereo system here?

I've picked up a nice Alpine head unit and a pair of Memphis amps (MCA2004 4Ch for mids/highs and a 1000d for subs). I'm still debating what I want to run for subs though. Kind of a toss up between Image Dynamics IDQ12's or Crystal PRO X212's. I've had 4 IDQ10's before and was quite happy with that set up. Most of the music that I listen to is metal so I love the punch they had. But I also am very curious about the Crystals since they're the same company that made the Audiomobile MASS12's that I also had a few years back. The PRO X212's aren't built as heavily as the MASS's but they're more for SQ I've read, which is what I'm after. I don't need the big, boomy, whale-humping, muddy bass that most people like.

Also looking for some input on components to carry the mids/highs... Any one have some that they're partial to?

I really like Infinity. I have the reference series components and I am very happy with them. Best for the price IMO. I have some Kappa 6x9s and a Kappa Perfect 12 as well.

Do you "put them through a workout"? I tend to listen to my music quite loudly most of the time. I'll need something that'll keep up and last.

If I were going to spend that kind of coin again I'd go with the Crystal COMP X212's. I'd looking to stay under $200/sub. I know there's plenty of great SQ subs out there for that price range.

I have a single 10" IDQ, 450 watt USAcoustics amp, and the factory bose. It sounds OK, this is in my DD.

im running amped infinity kappa perfect 6x9s *i believe they are a 5 way* rms like 120 watts each, with about 80+ watts per speaker and they easily make your ears ring at 3/4 volume, and a pro audio maats 12 dual voice coil wired to one ohm at about 700-800 watts and that pounds real hard when i want it too, i am going to rig up some 4" in the doors since i have so much sound in the back

the sub and amp setup i got from a place in monti, i went there often and he gave me some sweet deals on stuff since i was in there alot buying random parts, if he thinks its a cool setup he will give you subs close to cost sometimes

That's kinda what I've been eyeing for my front stage. If I do components I'll have to find a higher place for the tweeters but the windshield pillar should work for that. I guess I just don't want to have to cut up the factory lower door panels.

i dont really want to cut them up, however tan lower door panels probably arent that hard to find as its not the most desired color i can think of.

im thinking of fiberglassing a piece on that would only require like 4 small holes drilled in the lowers and then i can hide the holes if i dont like the setup

You're probably right about the desireability of tan (or camel in my case) door panels.
What you're planning on doing sounds very similar of what I had in my '86 Monte Carlo years back. It housed two 5 1/4's in each door bottom. The only thing I hated was the sound imaging with a passenger in the car. Their legs blocked the speakers...

its the price we pay for showing our cars off to people or letting them ride with us, i might actually put them in the kick panels because my car isnt run off of the computer anymore, and the driver side one is empty
