  • New Project 406

Well after messing around with the BBC 461 and had good luck with the peanut port heads but not with closed cambers I am switching gears and using a spare 406 I have in the garage. No one wanted to give anything for it so I am making it my next project. It will be a flat top forged piston engine with my old CC 292H that ran pretty good in the old 358 as this new engine will be more of a street oriented. I am going to use some Vortec heads on this project and will test a bone stock pair except for cutting the valve spring area for using better springs and seals. They will also have a nice 3 angle valve job but otherwise bone stock no porting.

The second set of heads will have some porting work in the chambers to unsrhoud the intake valves, the valves themselves will be back cut but are the same GM valves from the heads. The heads will also be bowl ported and a complete cleanup in the exhaust port. My goal while high is to put this 406 in the high 10's@ around 120mph. Can I do it? sure can if this engine will make 500hp and 500 lb. ft. of torque. Sould be an interesting year in 2020 testing more pure junk to give the LS guys more fits at the track with the little SBC.

Well yesterday was not so good. Went to turn the 406 over and it locks up in 2 spots. Thinking it might be the 5.7 rods hitting the cam like they will do, I pulled the timing cover off and the cam is free. Out came the 406 and took the oil pan off, engine turns over fine, Humm...It turns out that the Scat crank has larger counter weights and was hitting the oil pan. A couple of hits in the right areas and no more binding.

Got the 406 short block back together, seems the rear crank throw was hitting the oil pan. Couple of taps and its fixed. New cam is in and a different converter will be used now that the engine is out. I am going to use the Jeg's 10" converter that I had such good luck with when using the peanut port 461.
