    Yup, it was the 427 that came to be the 396 in 1965. Always wondered why Gm did that a 427 just has that ring about it. The Mark III was never released though. Just think those old Mark IV's evolved all the way up to Peanut Port headed engines which are still making power today, well in my car.

      My future brother in law and his mom bought a brand new '65 Impala SS with this new engine. It was a 396 4-spd, red with red interior. I'd never seen a 4-speed. Most cars I saw back then could hardly burn rubber, but this '65 was the first car I saw burn rubber in each gear. I was amazed that I could hear a car make the tires chirp at over 60 mph.
