  • anyone ever had an alternator fan explode.

so this happened friday. sounded like a huge backfire, pieces went flying out of the side of the car and dented the hood. cracked the coolant overflow bottle.

I'm not sure why they went to this overmolded plastic style mouse wheel fan vs the old stamped steel ones. now I get to deal with trying to get an estimate to fix the hood and submit a claim against the alternator company as it was less than two years old and maybe had 500 miles on it.

    used to look like so

the new version looks like they changed how it was molded together, maybe it will not blow up again.

Those old models were scary, change that puppy over to a CS130 alternator, more output on less voltage. Your car will love you for it.

ya, might have to buy something else and make it work. this is a 78amp alternator already, but it looks like most of those cs130's are 100amps or more. guess the replacement will make a nice paperweight on the shelf.

submitted the $838 estimate to fix the hood to the manager, shall see how that goes. sadly even tried to get it fixed, there's a very small chance the paint color would ever match this. maybe i'll just use the money to start putting my motor together.

The CS 130's are great to use. Make sure you get one off an 89 or 90 Suburban with a 454 engine as the bolt holes are clocked 6 and 12. I just got one for my kids Biscayne and will wire it up soon. You have it easy, just a wire or two and the main feed the you are good to go. I got mine from Rockauto and it was an AC Delco for like $77 +shipping.

Yup, a simple swap. Just make sure you do it with an impact gun as it's a bitch to do with hand tools.
