  • anyone have Kent-Moore J44295 tool for checking the clutch pack stack height

I'll be tearing apart the np246 in my pickup and putting in a new clutch pack and putting in the piece to prevent pump wear.

I figured i'd ask here if anyone has the tool they use to measure the stack height in them?

either that or I'll have to just bring the shaft and clutch assembly somewhere to just have them measure it for me.

I do not have anything, have you looked on line to see if there are any home tricks to check the clutch pack?

I haven't found anything yet. If I could fine the measurement I would need for the puck it probably wouldn't be too bad.

If I thought i'd use it more than 1 maybe 2 times i'd probably just spend the 100 bucks on the chinese version of it.

Call the guy that runs AWI transmission, he may be able to help.

I'll have to look them up.

pulled the thing apart yesterday, much burnt smell which was expected after the fluid that came out of it was pretty terrible. As expected there were maybe 3 frictions with any material left on them. makes sense since the front pinion bearing locked up one winter, and with these autotrac's they try to spin the front driveshaft all the time. with the driveshaft not able to move I assume is what nuked the clutches in this.

also the clutch apply bearing was missing the ball bearing retainer steel, which is likely what most of the stuff stuck on my magnet was.

had to order some parts today, new pump/appy bearing/pump screen etc. with that much metal in there i'm just going to put a new pump in for piece of mind rather than risking it with the old one as the screen was completely caked with clutch material/sludge. maybe have time to get it back together next weekend if parts show up.

Does your truck have an auto setting?, if so do not use it on dry pavement. It just ruins the clutches in there.

it has auto, but i've never used it. was driving it the one winter in 4 hi, all of the sudden came to a grinding halt. worked in 2wd, so I figured something broke in the xfer case. turns out it was the front pinion that locked up. due to these autotrac's clutch packs being pre loaded it nuked the clutches. you can see by this picture just how much different the stack heights are
