    Yeah, I found out what extreme cold does for turbocharged cars back when my Subie wagon died & I had to drive the GN during the winter. It's amazing how much more torque you get when it's -40F! It's also amazing how little traction there is.....

    Also, the performance of my dad's planes improved dramatically during the winter. With piston-engined prop-planes - thick, cold air gives you increased lift from the wings at a given speed, increased thrust from the prop at a given RPM, and increased power across the RPM range. The combination of the above translates to a huge overall performance increase in cold, dry air. Of course, the opposite is also true: In hot, humid air, prop-planes take a triple-hit in performance. In fact, underestimating the negative effects of crappy air is a common cause of accidents amongst inexperienced pilots.
