  • Automotive Service rip offs

So, yesterday I got to buy this little 05 Hyundai Accent from I guy that was supposed to have a plugged cat convert as the car won't rev over 2500 rpm. The guy paid a local shop $330 to diagnose the problem and replaced some relay that was causing all his problems. He returned with the same problem a few days later and the shop diagnosed a plugged cat convert. and that is when I got there. I called him and offered $500 for the car (asking price was $700) and he said ok. Mon. I went to look at the car and it did not start as the battery was dead, no matter, I jumped it and drove the car and it was like stuck in 3rd gear and ran funny. I still said I would take the car so yesterday I paid the guy drove it home (barley made it) then today I spent 1/2 hour on the car and it set a P1507 IAC code. Now it need plugs, air filter, and some other things but this was not enough to make the car act the way it did. After finding the code is for an IAC problem I decided to disconnect the IAC and of course it went to a fixed idle speed, now the car will rev to 5K easy and yes the cat convert is not plugged.

I pretty sure the IAC is shorted somehow and after I replace it and if that fixes the car I will let the former owner know what I found as he really wanted to know. He should be refunded his money and I will be glad to go to small claims court so he can get his money back from that shop as it was not diagnosed right from the get go. Really sad in this day and age when people call themselves techs and most of them are parts replacers.

An end to this story, The shop was on the right direction but may have put in a bad main ECU relay. I had power at 2 fuses when the key was off and 12V on the power cable when performing a voltage drop, nice to know the Cat Converter was good. I took out the relay the shop put in replaced it with an old Bosch relay and started right up, A/C worked fine and the IAC was plugged back in and all codes are gone, car runs great. Even the old battery charged up and is good. I called the former owner and he was like WOW, it is now up to him if he wants to go after them. The Shop is called,
