Here's a note from a local loss control department from an accident that happened a few days ago.
Really a horrible deal for these two guys...
I would like to take a moment of your time to let you know about a tragic
accident that occurred this week at Kline Nissan, a Twin Cities dealership,
that we can learn a lesson from and prevent a serious injury or death to
ourselves or a coworker.
Two young men in their early 20's will be forever scarred after the
tool/compressor room they were cleaning exploded. Shure Shots filled with
brake cleaner (same brake cleaner we use) was what was being sprayed to cut
the grease and dirt. As they were cleaning the room I was told that the
compressor kicked on causing a spark, igniting fumes and causing a
tremendous explosion that was felt throughout the building. I understand
the doors in the room blew open then slammed shut as the fire sucked in
oxygen. The doors buckled when they shut and trapped the two men in the
inferno until the doors were forced open using crow bars and sledge
hammers. Both were transported to Regions Hospital, one was airlifted and
the other was transported by ambulance. I am told that they have 3rd
degree burns over 80% and 30% of their bodies and both are currently in
medically induced comas.
There are a number of ways a similar tragedy could happen in one of our
service departments from a spark while filling a Shure Shot, a brake clean
barrel that isn't grounded, using brake cleaner on a hot engine dripping on
a hot catalytic converter or from spilled gasoline while working on a fuel
system and so on. Please take extra care when working around flammables
and stay aware of what your neighbor is doing.
Please join me in sending good thoughts, prayers and wishes for a full and
speedy recovery to the men who were burned, their families and their
coworkers.
