  • 2013 GT500 coming with variable RPM launch control from factory

    http://www.autoblog.com/2012/05/17/2...able-rpm-laun/

When you've got the most powerful factory V8 in the world, even the best driver can struggle with getting that power to the pavement. The 662 horsepower and 631 pound-feet of torque the 2013 Ford Mustang Shelby GT500 is packing can easily turn its rear tires into expensive clouds of smoke. That's why the 2013 Ford Shelby GT500 is the first Shelby Mustang to be factory-equipped with launch control. "With so much more power and torque on tap from the new 5.8-liter V8," says SVT senior engineer John Pfeiffer, "launch control makes it easier for drivers to take advantage of the performance." What's different about the Shelby GT500s launch control is that drivers can engage it by just pressing a single button, and it's also capable of being fine-tuned for the best reesults.

Launch control is by now a familiar technology, with systems operating by holding engine RPM at a set point to help facilitate clean, repeatable launches. "Launch control is essentially a special mode of the traction control system that integrates the brake and engine management systems to keep the tires balanced on the peak of the mu-slip curve," explains SVT's Pfeiffer. In plain English, it's designed to send as much torque to the tires as they can handle. What's different about the system in the 2013 GT500 is its flexibility. "Most of our competitors' launch control systems have a fixed engine launch speed," says SVT Engineering supervisor Eddie Khan, but since "not every driver has the same style, and surface, tire, and climate conditions vary," he points out, "we've given Shelby GT500 drivers the ability to adjust the engine speed to achieve the best and most consistent performance."

Drivers can use TrackApps through the instrument cluster or tap a switch to the left of the instrument panel to enable the system. Through TrackApps, the engine launch rpm can be adjusted between 3,000 to 4,500 rpm with steps of 100 rpm. There are other tricks up the GT500s sleeve, too. Extinguish the traction control while using launch control and you'll get an rpm-only mode that keeps the brakes out of the picture to avoid sacrificing any possible speed. Launch control also works with the different stability control modes to allow some wheelspin when that's the fastest way out of the hole. "It's not as intrusive as some TC systems have been in the past," said SVTs Khan. "We'e given our drivers the ability to exert control over all the power and torque this Mustang can produce."

Yeah, I've read articles about the system. Sounds pretty hi-tech. No pun intended. Sure beats my traction control. Mine will actually kick my foot off the pedal. Dan's Corvette works tons better. It will be interesting to see how hard a driver can launch the car. Of course, with the power output of the GT500 it probably won't require a hard launch.

Maybe Ford should de-uglify the GT500 front end

      Looks like a Tit Fish

Hey Ford - chop another wheelie in that awesome-titfish-mobile!

Isn't the second pic the one where I think they airbrushed out the floor jack they used to get the front wheels off the ground? Haha. Oops, I shouldn't make any unfavorable comments about these cars because I may offend Dan or maybe even brother Joe.

Nope, no offense taken here. I never liked Shelby and it was SHELBY that lied/photoshopped, not Ford.

I can still fly my Blue Oval flag proudly. :)

Ford engineers are testing the '13 GT500 today along with Evan Smith

                Engineers ran a best of 12.06 @ 121

Evan Smith ran a best of 11.8 @ 121 after 20+ runs. They let the car cool down and then he ran 11.8 @ 123.

The track is in Commerce, GA. Not sure what the DA is there right now but they are saying it's pretty warm.

Thanks for the update. Hmm...so an average driver will run low 12s in the car advertised as "THE WORLDS MOST POWERFUL V-8 PRODUCTION CAR!" LOL

Initially, I imagined the DA would be pretty bad since the track is in Georgia, but I checked it out and when they were running this morning the temp was in the mid 70s. DA was around ~1600 - ~1900 so it's really not THAT bad.

I guess I just expected with Evan Smith driving and with this new advanced technology launch control Ford has been hyping up, I thought it would run mid to low 11s and trap 125+ right off the dealership floor.

A stock 4300 pound 580 hp ZL1 has gone 11.9 @ 120, so I guess I'm just really not impressed with a 3800 pound 662 hp GT500 that goes 11.8 @ 121 with the best driver in the world behind the wheel. I mean I think the GT500 is cool, I just expected more with all the hype and trash talk.

Yeah, I totally agree. Sounds like the same old crap we went through with the '03 Cobras. Does anyone wonder why I post comments about these posers? If you recall, when the '03s were hyped up, I had the chance to drive one and definitely felt that the car's performance didn't match the hype. I was bashed for stating my opinion...in fact still hearing the displeasure about my honest opinion of the over hyped cobras. Well...here we go again. Plenty of hype about the GT500 and performance that doesn't match the hype. Pretty sad that a high dollar car advertised as "THE WORLDS HIGHEST HORSEPOWER PRODUCTION V-8" is no quicker than my 360 rwhp 12 year old technology N/A LS1. I should pro charge my car and bitchslap the people who give no respect to what I've accomplished with my weak assed car.

With that MPH it should be at least .5 sec. quicker. I don't think they had slicks on it.

The first drag times reported about the GT500 and your already bashing it? I would thought that it would of run better also but thats how it goes. If it had run low 10s a GM guy would still say its junk and overhyped. My 22 year old car was as fast but not showroom stock.
