  • Awesome '69 Camaro Build (Big $$$$)

Car is being built at one of the best places in the country, The Roadster Shop. Did Dale Jr's 72 camaro, etc. etc.

I will add more photos as I find them from the threads on Lateral-G. Car is a work of art though.

    As the car rolled in.

A work of mechanical art under the hood.

    Disassembly begins:

After analyzing the car and the build, it was decided that a custom perimiter chassis would be the best approach. The decision was made to widen the platform and build a chassis that would go out to the rocker panels. This would add strength and allow the body and the roll cage to be tied directly into the chassis. In order to do this, the stock floors would have to go.

The car was braced and the stock floor was then cut out.

    More:

    The frame rail build:

Main center rails welded up in the fixture.

Rear frame rail sections welded up then removed from the fixture so they can be ground smooth.

Early stages of the chassis build.

Body and engine mocked up on the bare frame to double check ride heights and clearances for the engine. The goal was to get the engine lower in the chassis to gain better hood clearance to the intake.

    Further progress on the chassis:

Angled side rails and a flat center crossmember will allow for a drop floor to be built so we can maintain the same headroom as if the original floors were still in place.

      More:

Body mocked up on the completed chassis:

The beginning of the new floor and trans tunnel.

      Further progress on the floors:

It has been a while since we have updated this thread, but a lot of progress has been made on the car.

All of the floors have been completed and welded in. We also widened the rear tubs to get a little more tire under the car with out rubbing.

Fabbed a bulkhead between the trunk and interior.

Mounted the seats, steering, and pedals. By building the dropped center crossmember in the chassis, it allowed us to lower the floor in the car and we were able to gain almost 2" of headroom compared to a stock floor.

A lot of work has also gone into the front of the car. The work in the nose of was all about creating more room. The intercoolers, oil coolers, air box, etc... left little room for a sufficient radiator with in the stock core support. That led to overheating problems and drivability issues. The core support was re-designed and built with the radiator mounted ahead of it. This gave us room for 2 large fans on the back side with plenty of room to spare for the other components still to come.

Start of the core support sides welded together with both sides punch and flared to give it a cool look.

        And more:

New complete core support tacked together

Radiator and core support mocked up in the car.

Next up we fabbed up a fan shroud and brackets to hold the 2 speed Viper fans in place.

The completed unit ready to go back in the car.

        Installed with room to spare

We knew going into it that since we had a custom wider radiator built for the car, and we moved the radiator forward to gain extra room, the stock hideaway headlights would not fit. The original headlight doors would pivot 90 degrees and sit beside the headlights when open. We re-designed the headlight door to slide behind the grille now and be operated off of actuators. (I'll get better pics of the mechanism once the header panel is removed in the next day or two.

The original headlight door is on the bottom, the new version is on the top.

        Closed

        1/2 way

        Open

We have the headlight doors just about completed. All of the tracks, supports, and actuators are in place and working properly.

Chris will post a video of the operation shortly.

Vid of headlight doors in action:

New engine makes right around 2,000 horsepower. Chassis needed to be beefed up to take the abuse that the new powerplant could provide. Also moved to a new IRS system and some other goodies as well.

Time for some updates: The custom intercooler arrived this week so we can now finish the plumbing for the turbo's.

The intercooler was mounted below the radiator and designed to fit perfectly between the frame rails.

The start of a custom overflow that we machined to fit inside the core support and stay out of sight.

Further work on the plumbing for the turbos and intercooler.

Fabbed up some fender braces to tie into the new core support. These will eventually tie into the custom radiators that will tuck in behind each headlight and cool the water and alcohol for the intercooler.

            Thanks everyone!

A couple more shots of everything coming together.

            The belly of the beast:

Vented louvers detail above the fans:

That's where they are at right now.

No, that's Sloss's favorite thing to say.

Sloss is a total idiot along with his side cocksucker Curt Nobrain.
