    This year since the people that are put in charge in Wisc. want to take away the right to orginize and be in a union I will not race there and we canceled the trip to the Dells. I know this may seem political but I was in the Teamsters for over 20 years and I am not union now, But I do respect that the people have the right to be in a union or not. Not one of those shithead legislators have taken a paycut themselves but always seem to want someone else to eat shit while they carry on spending away no mater which party they represent. I will not spend my money in a state that shits on people who are hard workers while the Wisc. Idiots give welfare to the freeloaders and such.

    I know you all have your opinion on this matter but remember one thing, If it were not for the unions in this country most of the working class people would be making crap for wages.

    Some of you don't race at Corda's track anyway but for those who do I urge you to go to BIR or the Grove this year and not give Wisc. buisness any money in any way shape or form.

    If this thread goes south then I will close it.

    Well Bob, since you decided to open a political thread that I have previously said we wouldn't, ya can't turn around a close it when you don't like the responses. In other words, you started it against what we decided and now you're gonna have to deal with anyone who wants to voice their opinion--whether you agree with them or not. I'm not going to allow this thread to be closed because that would be the crybaby syndrome and we all know TCO doesn't allow crybabies.

    You are absolutely right that unions have played an important role in the workplace. Just about everyone has benefited from many things the unions have used their power to establish. What they established years ago was a different world and a different economy though. I know you are a big union guy and if that works for you and you're happy, then run with it and keep doing things the way you feel comfortable with.

    What works for me maybe won't work for you or many others. But...I haven't belonged to a union since 1973 and I've done just fine. You know how I have earned more? Not from a union telling my employer to pay me more...nope, in order to make more money, I've had to PRODUCE more. I know what my employer would tell me if I said I was going to STRIKE if I want a raise. lol. If I want retirement benefits, I have to CONTRIBUTE to my retirement account and MANAGE it on my own. If I make a bad judgement in where I invest a portion of my wages and I lose it, then it's no ones fault but my own. I am totally ok with that. In fact, I feel that this country would be a helluva lot more productive if more poeople took care of themselves rather than waiting for the government or a union to take care of them.

    On April 7th I will have been in my current position for 25 years based on my PRODUCTION--not from a union protecting me. I could work from 8-5 and go home like many union members, but I do what it takes to get the job done and to make my job performance tough to be matched by anyone who might try. Although no one tells me to work until 8 or 9 PM, I sometimes do it because my job performance is critical to generating revenue to the people who sign my check. If I have to work on a day when I'm not required, I do it if there's something that needs to be done, not because I have to, but because I take that much pride in what I do. Not just to make the company money, but if my name is associated with the job, I have to feel that no one can match my commitment or performance. I have never told anyone in my workplace "I won't do that because that's not my job".

    Most of my beef isn't against a typical union worker, but it's the state and municipal workers whose retirement plans are out of control.

    Lets face it...the states are going broke due to a great portion of underfunded union benefit packages. For example, Illinois (one of the most corrupt states in the country) has about 80 billion dollars in underfunded retirement benefits. They have no idea as to where the money is going to come from to pay them. Some workers are working only a few years, only paying a small amount into their fund and are retireing at 49 to 50 years old and receiving full benefits as if they've worked and contributed for 25 years. That's pure insanity.

    As I watch the Wisconsin situation, I find it disturbing that teachers can "call in sick" because they are unhappy with the fact that they need to contribute more to their pension. (I know that's not the sole reason, but a major part of it) What's sad is the students suffer as a result of it. That sets a poor example to the kids and sends a messaage that if things don't go your way, then rather than deal with it, just call in sick. That's pathetic. On top of that, doctors writing excuses to demonstrators is fraudulent and in my opinion, those doctors found guilty should be dealt with by any lawful means available.

    My sister who has been a big union member for years, but now isn't part of a union, works in a state office in Ohio and all she sees daily are people complaining about how they are upset that they have to pay $5 towards prescription drugs. They stand around and complain and do the bare minimum at their job, because they know they are protected by the union. They even say that they'd have to do something really drastic in order to lose their job.

    GM went bankrupt due to over promising benefits to union workers and retirees. I recall them even paying workers NOT to work. Due to unsustainable packages the unions demanded for their workers, we almost lost an icon of a company due to out of control benefits. What pisses me off is that we could have had no GM and would have been left with Toyota and the other dumbass import companies taking up the slack.

    Now that GM has restructured those unsustainable packages, they are profitable and will soon overtake the Toyota clowns in sales.

    There's no way in hell I'm going to boycott Rock Falls. Al Corda is a private businessman and has nothing to do with striking workers or anything to do with the upcoming legislation procedures.

    One more thing...the current administration has created jobs, but mainly government or temporary type jobs. My question is...what the hell does the government produce? To get the economy going, we need jobs in the PRIVATE sector.
    This should become a great debate if anyone is game......

      Tell the whole story and tell it the way it is, not the way you want others to see it. So that they will side with you.

      When tax revenue for the state goes down so does the workers pay and benefits and or the number of workers or they can raise taxes on the ones that still have a job at the dells or the track and Al Corda can and will raise prices, cut pay, benefits and or number of workers to make up for the extra taxes that he and his employees will lose from their income, or they will just get sick and tired of the high price of state workers and close up the company.
      So Bob, would you rather the track and the dells raise prices and workers pay and or lay workers off. Just so the state workers don't have to suffer like the rest of the people in this economy. Government workers = hard workers, my ass. The question is NOT what can my country do for ME, but what can we do for our country to make it better for all,. Not just the Government employees. Almost everybody is losing right now and so should the Gov. workers.

        If you feel sorry for the Wisc teachers, they claim they don't have a high salary, but when you combine the salary AND union negotiated benefits, they are on the low end around $89k per year.

        This isn't "made up" info, it's public info.

        To normalize to the private sector of working 12 months per year and not 9, multiply all compensation by 1.33 (12/9).
        That will really begin to piss off the masses that pay for them.


        The average Milwaukee Public School teacher will be receiving $100,005 in compensation this year – $56,500 of that is in salary, and a whopping $43,505 is in benefits.

        Here's more public info (part1):It’s actually much much worse than that. If you look at the source data, omitted an important column: Fringe benefits.
        Mr. Daniel Nerad for example, leading the column at $198,500 salary, also receives an annual $58,215 in fringe benefits.
        It’s also instructive to examine the row count in the excel spreadsheets; Not only have salaries skyrocketed, but the number of just staff, not faculty, has steadily increased from 3861 in 2000, to 4136 in ’05, to 4327 in ’10, a 12% increase in 10 years
        By comparison, according to 2000 census and ’10 estimate, WI general population increased a mere 6%.

                    My intentions were never to start something Yes I know that people will disagree with me but it does not change my view of anyone here, It is just that to take away what people have worked hard to get over the years is wrong. I agree that people need to cut back on paying these people so much, That I am for. Like I said before I was a union person for years and the pension I will get is very small but it is something I worked for and I know it is not intended to be my main income.

                    I look at some Companys take advantage of workers and pay them crap, Last year that was me, but I put a stop to that and I did not need a union to do it for me. I will reiterate that I do not plan to go spend money in Wisc. when I can spend it here.

                    I respect both John H's and Glenn's opinion because we can have a debate without resorting to name calling. It's good to have some mixing it up once and a while.

                      You make some good and logical points Bob. What makes a good debate is to have differing points of view. Most people are still struggling with the economy and are angry. Somebody negotiated these outrageous packages and that's not the teachers fault but how they've handled it has only brought attention to what they make compared to a worker in the private sector. I think they're afraid the governor is going to take away their collective bargaining rights and if that happens, they'll lose the sweetheart deals. I guess if I had a package like them, I'd be panicking too.

                        Here's more of a picture of what's wrong with how pensions and health care plans by municipal workers. A great deal for the employee---a bad deal for tax payers.

                        City of Toledo workers.

                        They pay $0 towards pension (fully funded).
                        When they retire, they get 80% of salary.
                        100% surgery and x-rays covered.
                        $25 per month for medical for 1; $40 for employee and 1 additional; $55 per month for 3-10 in family.
                        $4 or $6 for generic prescriptions or $15 for brand name or $30 for preferred. (Can file and get 80% reimbusement)
                        $10 co-pay doctors office visits.

                        I'm not aware of anyone who wouldn't want their monthly medical package and especially retirement.

                        Again...we wonder why cities and states are going broke?

                          I agree they should pay more, But I disagree that the right to bargin should be stripped away. Seem to me that it would be the same as if the dealers were to say no more union shops, That in turn would be reason enough for a wildcat strike which does nobody any good. Some how I cannot believe that if a group has a contract, State or private if one side were to violate the agreement it most likely will end up in court, More waste of tax dollars.

                          I see tax dollars wasted every time I go to the store and watch the cop from our city that is at target all the protecting them instead of being in the hood. I have also seen the local cops shopping on city time, leave the car running while I watched as they mill around target taking it easy BS'ing with the manager, No crime or anything just BS'ing. I was at city hall one day and it seem like every high person there has 2 or 3 secrataries. Our city manager get over 150K a year, way too much and I am sure the local super in our school district gets a ton.

                          What we need is to account for every dollar spent, Right down to the f-ing nickel. Audit everything and those who waste money on crap should just be fired.

                            Disagreeing is healthy. lol

                            From what I've read, the lawmakers from Minnesota don't feel the need to follow Wisconsin in taking the teachers collective bargaining away. I think they (like most state lawmakers) are waiting to see what happens in Wisc though.

                            You know how the union agreements work better than I do, so it would make sense that if they have agreement it would need to be honored or it goes court. I know the GM workers had contracts too but ended up to concessions in that mess.

                              Thanks Z for that amazing count and amount.I happen to work for and with what some people call "the dink factory".In the last 12 years the amount of management has increased by 30% while thoughs of us that see to it that things are running alright (mechanical) has diminished by 12%.We'er down to fewer horses but more wips.
