Let's talk about Toyota's flagship POS hybrid which is a total scam:
Vehicle Prices
2005 Prius MSRP (base): $20975
2005 Corolla MSRP (base): $13780
"Hybrid Premium:" $20975 - $13780 = $7195
Fuel Economy
Prius: 51/48 mpg --> 50mpg average
Corolla: 29/36mpg --> 32.5mpg average
Fuel Use
Assumption: driving 30,000 miles/year for 4 years.
Prius: 120 000 miles/(50mpg) = 2400 gallons
Corolla: 120 000 miles/(32.5mpg) = 3692 gallons
Corolla fuel premium: 3692 - 2400 = 1292 gallons
Fuel Premium
Assumption: $2.75/gallon average fuel price from 2005-2009
(1292 gallons) * ($2.75/gallon) = $3553
So you pay an extra $7195 up-front for the Prius over a Corolla, and you might have saved an aggregate $3553 over 4 years of heavy driving.
Oh wait, I was using the false EPA numbers Toyota had claimed back in the day. If we try the real world numbers (i.e. 42ish mpg) it's even more retarded to buy the Prius.
Maybe you start actually saving money after 10 to 15 years, but doesn't the battery need to be replaced after 10 years? How many thousands of dollars does that cost? And do we really expect these idiots to be driving these things with 150k, 180k, 200k miles?

Yeah but some people feel they're helping save the earth by driving those things, while others strictly go for the epa ratings and fail to pencil the numbers. Let's face it--Toyota hopes most fall into either group. It appears their marketing people are brilliant.
