I was at J&J speed shop when I heard the news that John had died, Was very sad.
The only other time that made me feel that way was when Blaine Johnson died at Indy in
    '96

We grew up in that neighborhood so a good friend of mine and I used to stop at Hamline Hardware all the time when we were kids (12-16 or so). John would let us go back to the shop to see his car and he'd tell us drag racing stories. I only saw him race a couple of times, but as a guy...he was a really nice person who obviously loved to take the time to talk to the kids in the neighborhood that wanted to see his car. We still talk about John quite often.

      Thanks for this post!

Thank You all for the kind words about John. Any of us that knew him, knew he was a true champion even though the stats may not say so. He was truely one class act. I really enjoy all for your responses. Thanks!

I watched him warm the car up that morning. As a person that witnessed the mishap and seeing the car come to rest across the track from me,I knew he left us right off.I won the bracket 3 championship that year but it meant little.Three others lost their lives that season.

John Hagen was a class act. The only pic I have of him was when warren Johnson and Mr. Hagen were checking out the Gapp and Roush Tijuana Taxi (4 door Maverick Pro Stocker) at Minnesota Dragway NHRA points meat,I think in 1974. I was on leave when I was in the Army. The pic has never been seen except by me. Its on a slide,so I would have it made into a print. I hope this will get me off my lazy ass and do it. If and when I do I will post it here. One copy will be sent to Warren Johnson. I am sure he will laugh.I named it "What New Hell is This". The Taxi won Pro Stock that day.

Was 28 years ago yesterday John was killed. Wish I was old enough to have met him, and see his cars in person.
